All sorts of tools, big and small, are needed to build an aircraft.
Hand tools such as an electric drill, electric sander, etc are indispensable. I have wornout 3 Dremmel tools. Traditionally, air powered tools have been used in aircraft work. The air tools are fine for metal aircraft, but they can leave a fine mist of oil that can settle on fiber glass parts. The oil film will be difficult to remove and tends to compromise resin bonding integrity - not a good thing.
My shop has a bench mounted drill press from Harbor Freight, 11-inch and 16-inch woodcutting bandsaws from Sears, a small metalcutting bandsaw from Sears (definitely beats a hacksaw) and heavy-duty, 5-inch jaw, bench vise.
