Hi All! I purchased a Catalina with a 65hp Hirth Fuel injected engine and am keeping it in New Haven CT. I was wondering if someone has flown one of these very high? I live in South America at an elevation of 8,535 feet and am planning to bring it here. Please shoot me an e mail to discuss High density high elevation ops. efraim.otero@gmail.com Efraim

Hi Guys, I believe Russ O may be off the grid for winter as he is probably in a warm sunny place. I purchased his Catalina this past summer and it is in good shape with great workmanship. It has sustained a small amount of damage as I trailered it from BC to Ontario CA. I am interested in finishing the build, but find it hard to get time to work on my Amphib and the Cat. I will be using a 582 or 912 if I can find a mount for either. My favourite engine choice is the D-motor, but it is a big $ gamble as it is still quite new. The Catalina I got off Ross is fully documented with the MDRA and is now transferred as a build in my name. I would be interested to sell if the offer is right. Everything but engine mount is included. Thanks Dale PS JIM MANUS; I own the "best of both designs" SURFING PILOT.

I was very happy to come on your site last eveniing. You have provided many useful and interesting ideas. I have been building mine off and on for about 12 years. Wings done, but tanks not in, wiring not in, and not closed in with fabric. Controls in, but brakes still worrying me so they are not finished either. Mine was made for the mechanical, but the pedals are not properly set up for connections to cables. Hull is on, but much more to do. I am not wanting to use the 582, it's expensive and there seems to be so much conflicting comment about reliability. Presently I am considering a Revmaster with PSRU and the 74inch prop. I would rather sacrifice useful load than reliability. I would welcome any communication about the Avid amphib. from you or from those who have signed in your guestbook. If you could explain how to do this, perhaps also with pictures, i would be very thankful! It`s not many Catlalinas around, so there is very limited people to ask about this nice plane. Hi Brad, I already sent you my comments 2 years ago. As I told then, I am completing the change of engine to a Rotax 912S, a lot of modifications, the change of fabric and paint on my Amphibian #98A. If you send me your e-mail, I can send you some pictures. Of the last part of you project, the first flight, I have an important suggestion, probably too late. I would test flight from the lake in where you made the boat test. The Catalina is quite easier to take of and landing from water than from land and you have a very big loanding field. Best wishes for your first flight Manfredi

HI: Again, thanks for your web site. It's vary useful and informative , Thanks. My wife and I recently purchased a Avid Amphib. with only three and half hours on it. I have been busy making some additions to it including a elect fuel pump and rebuilding a trailer to acommadate the 24 1/2 ft. when its folded. Another change I am thinking of is hinging the canopy on the top rear. Do you know of any one who has done this. With proper latching, this should increase accessibility. Thanks again; Lyle

I picked up an Avid Anphibian, that was crashed. The first thing I looked at was the landing gear, which I did not like at all. I am reamoving the gear from the plane and installing it in a wooden box, with a liniar accuator to raise and lower the gear, and a bungee shock system. I will fill the box with sand bags to 1200 lbs. then drop test the shock system. I made a model that workes great, but need to find the shock travel under various loads. Drop testing is the only way I know to find out. It will take a few weeks to finish my testing if you are interested, let me know I will take photos as I proceed.

Looks good Brad. Hope you get it done this year. As you know, I'm building the Thorp and I too hope to get mine done this year. I've been at it since '94, but, have travelled with the company and the Army so much that only a couple of months a year worth real work is done. Now with the Army out of the way, I've gotten real serious about it. What's your tentative completion date. What part of town do you live in? Maybe i can come see it. Don

I have Catalina #170 which I think is the last Catalina kit sold by Avid in Ennis MT. It has a Rotax 912S(100hp 4 cycle) engine and the Airmaster constant speed prop with 3 blade 70" warp drive blades blades. I designed and built a totally different canopy with gull wing doors. I also built an electric actuated landing gear setup that was not robust enough for a hard landing and am now working on making it stronger plus a few other minor mods and hope to be flying again this Summer. Keep plugging and you will get there!

Hi Brad Congratulation very great job!!. I built Amphibian 98A 12 years ago, it is a wonderfull plane, but mine has 2 stroke engine that are garbage I broke one 582, one 618 and one Simonini, 3 forced out field landing with no problems the plane is like a Jeep. I am flying with an old 618 and planing a change to 912. As she needs lots of modifications, wings tanks, twisted tail and new engine mount, I will overhoul the complete airpalane and your pictures are giving me great ideas for improvements. Thank you very much!! and my very best wishes for you first flight Regards Manfredi

Have been following the posting on the Avid site and saw your web address. I too have a Catalina, it was started by a friend of mine who finished it and never got the wings or flapperons set just right and the aircraft kept rolling to the right and contacting the pavement and breaking. Since then have fixed it and gotten it's belly wet also. It's a fun plane to play with, but wish He had installed a elevator trim control. Take care and keep building.
